It’s important that the quality and resolution of the photos I work from are good quality. If the commission is a surprise for someone it can be quite hard to get the original files, but the original files are preferred rather than photos taken from social media sites, as once the photos have been uploaded to social media they get compressed and lose some detail. If you only have photos from social media or old film photos they can still be good enough quality, so please don’t hesitate to send them over and we can discuss the possibilities.

Pastel pencils can smudge if touched therefore framing the artwork is highly recommended, framing is available as an option before you receive the artwork, or you can receive the artwork unframed so you can frame it yourself.

The frames I use are produced and handcrafted at a high standard from a professional framers, there is a wide range of styles, colours and finishes. It usually takes 10-14 days for the framer to build and send the frame out to me, so it’s best to decide at the start of the process if you’d like the commission framed so I can order it.

The price of framing varies greatly depending on the choice of frame, as an example a 6x6” frame starts at around £30

Care should always be taken when hanging the completed artwork, even the most archival of materials can suffer from discolouration if left in direct sunlight for a long period of time.

If you’re choosing to frame it yourself here are some tips to help you.

Placing a spacer between the drawing and the front mount lets any pastel dust fall behind the front mount and not onto the glass (a spacer is a narrower mount that sits in between the front mount and the drawing).

Glass can be a better choice than perspex plastic as on the rare occasion the static of the plastic can lift the pastel off the drawing.

It can be advisable to place a piece of acid free paper or board behind the drawing to keep it away from the brown backing board.
